Lombok Religious Festivals

When you think of Lombok it's best not to compare it with Bali as there is no comparison.

Bali's extremely fertile land and plentiful rainfall have always produced more than enough food for everyone. Once having more than enough food, Bali's kings had the time and resources to pursue more intellectual and artistic interests - thus developing & refining the religion, arts and crafts one sees today.

Lombok on the other hand was not blessed with such abundance. It is a hard scrabble existence on Lombok. A royal court was never (with the exception of the Balinese domination of Lombok's west coast), developed nor did the people have much time to pursue artistic interests when harvests are lean. Dances then are not elaborate - they mostly mimic and glorify daily activities such as pounding rice.

So what you see on Lombok is what you get - simple, a hardworking people celebrating the simple joys of life in a simple manner.
